How do self balancing scooters work?

If you’re living in a big city and go outside daily, you must have seen at least one person riding a self balancing scooter. This is a new trend that’s gaining popularity very, very fast. More and more people are opting for self balancing scooters because they are safe, eco friendly, energy efficient and easy to use. Eco friendly and energy efficient somehow go hand to hand, if you use electricity as an energy source, you will not pollute and all you will have to do to maintain that energy source is to recharge a battery once in a while. Now, the question as it stands in the topic is, how do self balancing scooters actually work?

Well, how they function is extremely easy, if you want to accelerate all you have to do is lean forward, or if you want to stop, lean backwards. For steering purposes, if you want to turn left, push the right handlebar forward, if you want to go right, pull it backwards. It’s as simple as that. But to actually achieve the great functionality of this device is not that simple, so how does it work?

The thing we would compare self balancing scooters that will describe them the closest is human inner ear. Just like our brain gets the idea of where we are and how we’re positioned at any given moment in time, microprocessor that serves as a brain of self balancing scooters knows that as well. The only difference is that our brain uses fluids and signals while microprocessors have a tilt sensor. Just like our inner ear, a tilt sensor sends signals to the microprocessor which later on regulates the motor. This clears the confusion on how does the device know when to accelerate and when to stop, but how it actually balances itself is a different question.
For self balance, scooters have another sensor system. This system works on a principle where if a person riding the scooter pushes on a point at the top of the spinning wheel, the system will push a force on the opposite end of the spinning wheel thus maintaining the balance.

Another critical part of Self balancing scooters is safety control. But what happens if the system malfunctions and self balance stops working. Based on that each time self balancing scooters system fails, you will fall on your nose. To prevent this designers thought of a clever feature that is installed in every self balancing scooter. Once the main microprocessor stops working, another one will take its place and keep your scooter balanced. While replacing the main one it also sends the message of a system failure alerting you that something is wrong and you need to stop before it slowly stops working.

Knowing all this, you probably got the desire to buy one for yourself. Self balancing scooters may be a little pricey but knowing they won’t cost you any more than the electricity you will use for recharging purposes, they may be a smart investment.
